Ka.Lego Enters the Kirbyverse

Ka.Lego has put up this amazing digital concept for a minifig helmet. Reminiscent of the work of comics legend Jack Kirby, it's a fantastic idea with a lot of potential. It sounds like this will remain a digital design for now until Ka can find a way to bring it to life.

This also raises an interesting idea regarding 'digital customization'. Since 99.9% of custom creations are only seen as digital images anyway (i.e. pictures via the web), why not use a masking technique instead of cutting and gluing parts? Why not digitally change the color of a part instead of painting or dyeing it? It would be the nexus of digital art and physical part customization. Now nothing will replace having a physical custom in your hands, but this idea seems to have some merit.

What do you think? Is there a future in digital customization of minifigs? Please share your thoughts in the comments section.

Ka.Lego has several step by step shots on his Flickr stream of how he accomplished this image. Check it out.
