BrickArmy's New Custom Minifigures

BrickArmy's been showing off some new custom military minifigures on Flickr recently. This group shot shows off several that combine decals from Roaglaan, Hazel's Amazing Armory Ltd, and BrickArms

BrickArmy hopes to have some of these for sale soon. Check out their website in the meantime and see all that they have to offer. They have a custom boonie hat that's really quite nice.

Exobrick's Fantastic Combos

Exobrick has always been adept at taking several official and custom parts and creating something with real appeal. His latest creation is no exception.

The hat is from Si-Dan, the body wear is from BrickTW, and the gas mask and shield are from Amazing Armory. The Auto-9 hand cannon is courtesy of BrickArms, while the cape and sheath are from MMCB.

The head? It's from the new LEGO Star Wars Embo minifig. I can see the head for this and the Imperial Pilot showing up in a lot of custom creations this year.

You can see other create customs from Exobrick via his Flickr stream. If you are interested in checking out where you can get some of these great custom parts, check out Minifig.Cat (Si-Dan), BrickTW, MMCB, and BrickArms. These specific Amazing Armory items can be purchased from FireStar Toys. Similar items can also be purchased from United Armory in the US and Canada.

Hazel Fantasy - New Limited Edition Halo Reach

Hazel Tam has been placing new pics on the web of upcoming 2011 product. The Jorge custom minifigure from Halo Reach is just one of those items. It is still unclear as to if Hazel intends to release this item as a limited edition or not; however, there are some cool gasmask and firearm designs which will be available for wider release.

It would seem that January 2011 is now the new date for 'all systems go'. Here's keeping our fingers crossed.

Quick Hits: Odds and Ends

I have bits and pieces of news to share, so I thought I'd 'clear the board' and get them out...

Congratulations to Tervlon who won the October 'Elements of Great Building' contest on the BrickArms forums. His submission Harry & Ned captured the theme of 'ice' quite well, a solid build, and a great story to accompany it. If you would like to see more, check out Tervlon's Flickr stream. November's contest theme is 'sand', so get out those bricks, sign up for the BrickArms forum, and get designing today!

BrickForge has been posting pics of the new items that have been 'sneaking' onto the site over the past few days. One new item I neglected to mention was the 'double plume'...when the 'single plume' just won't do! Head on over to BrickForge to see the new pics today.

United Armory continues to put up new product from Amazing Armory Ltd. The Cyborg Armor set is a nice one to look for. If you are in the US or Canada you should check them out!

Consider the board 'clear', citizens. More as it happens...

Quick Hits: Weekend Edition

It always surprises me how on any given day in Minifig Nation you might have a wave of news hit you out of the blue. Let's get to it...

It looks like BrickTW has now posted their new arms designs to their BrickLink store. Some real stand-outs for me are the Quin Long shield and their various arrow designs that can be held in the minifig's hand. The body wear is available as well. Only the new head gear to go and then the whole, new line-up will be ready to order. Expect the full line up by early next week.

Hazel has been updating the status of the new Amazing Armory website via Flickr. There are still a few more details that need to addressed before it goes live, but rest assured, we will let you know once it does. Website or no, we've already told you that FireStar Toys has a supply of the new Hazel Fantasy guns. I have also heard that by tonight, US/Canadian customers can start to order product from United Armory! I believe it's Pedro's goal to have the items on the store either later tonight or tomorrow.

In other AMA related news, check-out these prototype pictures of the new shields with paint! These are absolutely amazing...no pun intended. When Hazel said he wanted to up the bar in minifig custom items, he wasn't kidding.

Although not new news itself, I thought I would post this pic of the Tiny Tactical watches (which I've not done before). Nicely detailed items that can give your fig that 'extra' touch. You can see more about these on the Tiny Tactical BrickLink store

A couple of bits on the site and the store. I've added a page tab now for 'Customization Tutorials' (you can see it in the blue bar at the top). These are links to various articles and tutorials on minifig customization techniques. I was always concerned that these got lost in the sidebar, but now they live on their own page for the world to see. As I say on the page, if you have tutorials you know of or would like to submit a tutorial to the site (hint, hint) I would be more than happy to host it. As I view this site to be a resource of the entire LEGO minifigure community, if you have suggestions or comments, please drop me a line (uglyduck.bricklink@gmail.com).

Some people ask me, "Why is the site called The Ugly Duckling at BrickLink?" Well, a little over a year ago I opened a store on said site focused on selling LEGO minifigures. That led to Facebook, and then, finally, starting this blog. So it really all started with the store. Speaking of the store, I have dropped my international shipping rate to $3.00 USD (originally $3.25). I have a sense this was a barrier for some potential international customers. If  you haven't taken a look at the store, please take the time for a quick peek. We have several Series 2 Collectible Minifigures for $2.99 USD, including accessories and stands. There are also a few Star Wars and Harry Potter items available. Shipping is flat rate when using USPS First Class, so you can buy all you want and the shipping fee stays the same.

That's all for now, citizens, enjoy your weekend. More news as it happens...

FireStar Toys has Hazel Fantasy Weapons

FireStar Toys appears to have a limited supply of new Hazel Fantasy brand weapons from Amazing Armory Ltd. This is actually the first place (I know of) where you can buy these items. Again, FireStar admits that the supply is limited. FireStar is based in the UK, but they do ship internationally, so hurry over to their store.

If you click on the link above go to the last product page to see the four new gun models. Also use coupon/voucher code 'KV882256' at check out for an additional 10% off, now through January 2011.

(Via FireStar Toys on Facebook)

Some Site Updates

I've been doing  some housecleaning here on the site. I've gone back and tried to correct and update the minifigure guide for LEGO Harry Potter. Some image and information fixes, as well as updating which figures will be in set 10217, Diagon Alley. As with any of the guide entries, if you notice an error, discrepancy, or out of date information, please just drop me a line and let me know. I'll fix any issues as soon as I can.

I have also moved the 'Retailer's Bazaar' section lower on the sidebar, as it had been starting to crowd out the main site information. The affiliate sites will continue to remain at the top of the sidebar. I have also added another banner to the bazaar, BrickTW, in advance of their new product launch later this week.

As you may have seen in the previous post, I've started to collect the product reviews for Tiny Tactical. The post entry below will be updated over time, but if you ever want to make a quick jump to it, go to the 'Product Review' tab at the top of the page. There you will find links to all of the product reviews we've conducted to date. We have one more TT review planned for the near future, then we will branch out to reviews of Arealight and Amazing Armory Ltd. product. If there are certain products you would like to see reviewed from any custom house, just let me know and I'll see what I can do.

Given that I'm moving and shifting items around, if you experience any issues while viewing the site, please just drop me a line.

That's all for now, citizens, more to come once it's available.

Update: Amazing Armory Ltd. and BrickTW

I've just received word from both Hazel and the folks at BrickTW. The Amazing Armory Ltd. site is taking a bit longer to finalize, so it may be a few more days before it launches. Hazel and company are working very hard to have it up as soon as they can.

Kevin at BrickTW also wrote to let me know that sales are delayed a few days. The current plan is for the new armor to be sold starting 11/5, arms and weapons on 11/8, while the new hair pieces will be available on 11/11. So the good news is that we'll have new BrickTW armor by week's end!

Both groups want to make certain they bring you only their best offerings, so worry not. We will just have to be patient for a little while longer.

Quick Hits: Did I Miss a Day?!

Feels like a Tuesday today with all of the news floating around the interwebs. Let's shake off that candy hangover and get down to business.

BrickArms launched their October 2010 release at the 11th hour last night. Lots of cool new products and even a custom minifig design. The launch includes the following:
  • Brodie Helmet
  • Modern Combat Helmet
  • Shaun UK Zombie Fighter with custom printed torso
  • Spy Pack with Exclusive Limited Edition Golden Gun
  • Zombie Defense Pack 2010.1
  • World at War Chrome Pack
  • Modern Chrome Pack 2.0
  • Scifi Chrome Pack 2.0
  • Blade Chrome Pack 2.0
Even I haven't had time to peruse all the fun so head on over to the BrickArms store and check it out.

Tiny Tactical will be restocking their shelves today at around 5 pm PST (they are located in British Columbia, Canada). On tap for returns are the TT-RPzB54 Panzerschrecks, Guns (KSV, SBR-M4, G18), tactical vests, TL-122 flashlights and Handie-Talkies, Minifig watches in (Gold, Stainless, Black, OD Green, yellow, red, blue, dark grey, dark tan), M9A1 Rifle Grenades and Crickets. Good thing too as I'm re-releasing the Panzerschreck review on Eurobricks today and have a new review ready to launch.

We should expect some new news from Amazing Armory Ltd. and BrickTW very soon. I noticed this morning that the Amazing Armory site still shows the countdown clock, and no word yet from BrickTW. I'll let you know if I hear more from either vendor.

More as it becomes available...

Inside The Customizers Studio: Hazel Tam, Part 2

Welcome back to our second day of interviews with Hazel Tam, founder and chief designer of Amazing Armory Ltd. Yesterday we discussed many of the elements behind Hazel's design philosophy and views on the custom minifig accessory market. Today we take a look at the past to clear up some confusion, while turning turning our eye to the future.

Is there a story behind the Amazing Armory name (where did it come from)? Also, what is the story with the (old) 'bullet-head' mascot?

"Amazing Armory is a name that reflects my dream. An armory that wins  through amazing products! The bullet-head came to me while I was doodling. It was easy to recognize, and that was the reason we used it in the past. It was fun, but I believe I need something more serious than that now. Amazing Armory Ltd. is a production house for different kind of products, a new logo is needed. Therefore, from now on, our new logo will replace the current logo."

I must admit that in the past it was unclear as to who was involved in the old Amazing Armory. How did the people involved with the original Amazing Armory come together?

"It takes time and experiences to search for the right people to join the team, and I have to say, sometimes I pick the wrong people. Amazing Armory start by me, the original concept was to attract people who are interested in making and designing products to join us.

I am a designer, and I work as a designer because I have a passion and a dream. Money is not what my main focus on. Some people joined us about a year ago, yet turned out to be thieves who tried to steal Amazing Armory from me. It is a shame that it didn’t work out the way I expected. But now we are Amazing Armory Ltd, I would say that this is a brand new start. With new members and a new direction, I believe we can reach a higher goal."

I understand that 'Amazing Armory Ltd.' will have a whole new series of brands underneath this banner. How can customers ensure they are getting products made and designed by your new company and not the old one?

"After the unfortunate events of Amazing Armory, I rethought the focus of Amazing Armory. To me, Amazing Armory is just the company name. Amazing Armory Ltd. is a production house with several brand names underneath, HAZEL-Fantasy belongs to this category. Nightmare System, Orrangnade, United Armory will join Amazing Armory Ltd. and continue to produce high quality products for our customers. As such, our LEGO customers shall remember HAZEL-Fantasy as the brand name for custom parts. That’s the easiest way to find the products that they are looking for. With our new website coming, customer can have a better understanding of what those brand name stand for."

Can you share with us a little bit about the new brands that will be coming out soon (Nightmare System, Hazel Fantasy, etc.)? How will they be different from each other? How will they work together?

"As I said, HAZEL-Fantasy will focus on custom parts. All of them are still designed by me, and we will have over 80 new items in 2011.

As for Nightmare System; we are trying to something new, and therefore we still need more research and insight on these new ideas. We will keep everyone updated once we have any news.

I must talk about my Japanese friend who taught me everything. He is going to join Amazing Armory Ltd. in the near future with brand new directions of products. His skill shall bring marvelous products to Amazing Armory Ltd."

You've worked with other customizers/designers like Orrange in the past. How many other designers will you be working with under the new brands?

"With new brands and new Amazing Armory Ltd, we are excited to announce that a group of very talented designer has joined our team. Our chief concept designers will be HAZEL Tam, Nakamure and John. We have 2 3D designers, 8 animators and 2 graphic designers. We will still use Flickr as our communication channel with our customers and these designers will soon join our discussion.

Also, we are opening a new co-operation project for those who are interest to join the toy design industry. Our plan is to help them create new products with smaller quantity and provide a suitable environment for them to grow their business. This is the job of Amazing Armory Ltd."

A lot of exciting things to look forward to, but you won't have to wait long. In a little over 24 hours, the Amazing Armory Ltd. website will go live. Product will be available soon after on the website or through United Armory (US/CAN) and FireStar Toys (UK/International). These three outlets are the only ones to carry these new and exciting products. If other authorized resellers come on board, we will be certain to let you know.

I want to extend a big 'thanks' to Hazel and John for taking the time to set up this interview. I'm really looking forward to all that Amazing Armory Ltd. has in store for us, as I'm certain the rest of the community is too.

Inside the Customizer's Studio: Hazel Tam, Part 1

I am pleased to announce our third interview in the Inside the Customizer's Studio series today. We will be talking with none other than Hazel Tam, founder and chief designer of the new Amazing Armory Ltd. I'm certain many of you have been aware of Hazel's work over the past few years with his former company. I have personally been in awe of his designs and was greatly honored by his willingness to participate in this session. I must also thank JasBrick who served as the initial conduit between Hazel, John, and I. A big thanks to Jas for helping to make this happen.

I hope to communicate what the past, present and future hold for Hazel and Amazing Armory Ltd. At the end of these sessions, I'm certain you will be excited about what Hazel and company plan on bringing not only to the LEGO minifigure customs community, but also the toy industry in general.

The interview itself happened via correspondence during the time that Hazel was ramping up for the AMA re-launch. We begin the conversation talking about Hazel's design philosophy and minifig customization.

In piecing together your bio I understand that you are originally from Hong Kong but worked in Japan. Were you working in the toy business prior to getting into minifig customization or was it just a hobby?

"I was born in Hong Kong, but I studied in Japan a many years ago. I used to work with a Japanese friend, and he taught me all the skills to customize parts for different uses. We used to use these skills to make plastic models. I was a fashion designer once, about 6 years ago. I started with customize parts around 2007, for hobby at first. Back then, it was just for show.

At the beginning, I didn’t really take it serious, as it was just a hobby. When I thought about turning this into business, I had a vision that I must create a new style so people will remember my products, not just as custom parts for LEGO, but as designer toys. And that was the start of Amazing Armory, and the main concepts of Amazing Armory Ltd.

We are not only doing custom parts for LEGO, but also have 3D design, Graphic Design and fashion Design. Amazing Armory Ltd. will become a production house with many different products and designs!"

Your designs are very different from other custom houses (i.e. BrickArms, BrickForge, etc.), you even take great care in designing the packaging for your products. How would you describe your design philosophy?

"It’s all about design concept. My job as the chief designer of Amazing Armory Ltd forces me to think about how to produce the best product for our customers. I believe we have to focus more on how a custom part can transform into other toys you buy from a local toystore. We wish to create an image for our standard packing, so our customers could instantly recognize our products. That’s one of the reasons we focus not just on the custom part, but also the packing of our products."

I've read in other interviews that video games have been one source of inspiration for your designs. What are other areas that inspire some of your work?

" I have to admit that video games are one of the major sources of my inspiration. After all, we live in a world surrounded by different kind of media and it seems impossible to escape from them. Movies are another major source of my inspiration.

Yet what I try to do is not only about making them 'LEGO' style, after all that’s not people expecting from us, but to re-create the image inside my mind."

You've mentioned in other interviews designs you've had in the works based on Final Fantasy and Lord of The Rings. Are you looking to do more in the 'fantasy' vs. 'sci-fi' area?

"Final Fantasy custom parts have been a dream of mine for over 6 years, it is a must for me to finish it someday in the future. This is something I have to do, and it is part of the reason I call myself HAZEL-Fantasy.

About Lord of the Rings, I already have some ideas in my mind. Yet, Fantasy area is not HAZEL-Fantasy focus for now; it belongs to Nightmare System. HAZEL-Fantasy is currently too busy working on sci-fi area."

Who do you see as your real competition? Other custom houses? Other toy companies?

"In terms of LEGO, I would say that the real competition is LEGO, LEGO is the ultimate winner in this, and no one can beat it. In terms of Amazing Armory, I would say that HOT TOYS is the focus of our company."

What is your dream project? What are the obstacles that stand in the way of going after it?

"My dream project? It’s hard to say. I believe it is 12” figs. I’ve been a fan of HOT TOYS for a long time and I am really interested to try out what they’ve done. Time has been my obstacle for a long time; I have lots of ideas, but each of them takes a lot of time to perfect."

There are a lot of up and coming customizers who would like to follow in your footsteps and make a career out of minifig customization. What do you believe the biggest challenge is in becoming a professional minifig customizer?

"I believe it is not about following in my footsteps. After all I am not the first one to come up with this idea of working in the customization field; however, I am glad that people see me as a pioneer in this, and I am really excited about all the new customizers. Their stuff is great! You see, the difficulty in customization is hard to understand until you pick up tools and try it by yourself.

Many new minifig customizers appear on the internet these days and it is interesting to look at how people choose their topics. You know, LEGO has been a famous brand for all these years, and it is hard to keep yourself up with that. I’ve been trying to maintain the fresh and modern image of our products, and hopefully to reach something different than the LEGO direction!

I usually think about the question like will the customers still choose to buy our products if LEGO already has something similar? As a customizer, design concept is very important. I believe if a customizer doesn’t have a clear artistic style, then he or she is no different than a designer for LEGO. There is nothing that original about them in that case."

Join us, tomorrow when we finish our interview session by taking about Hazel's previous company and what the future looks like for Amazing Armory Ltd.

The Color Commandos Ride Again

It's been a while since I posted one of eclipseGrafx's custom creations. Let's fix that, shall we?

Victor uses a lot of trans-blue BrickArms accessories and weapons to a really nice effect. The white armor and shield from Amazing Armory Ltd compliment it well.

The pic is titled as a 'work in progress' but I think the piece is outstanding as is. If the piece looks this good now, I can't wait to see the final piece.

More Amazing Armory Ltd Sneak Previews

"Amazing Armory is a name that reflects my dream. An armory that wins through amazing products!" - Hazel Tam

This is an excerpt from an upcoming interview with Hazel Tam of the new Amazing Armory Ltd. Over the past few weeks, Hazel and company have been releasing peeks at their new products due out November 1st. The latest line-up of firearms from the Hazel-Fantasy sub-brand can be seen here.I must admit, I'm partial to the rocket launcher.

"Wait a minute?" you say, "What do you mean Hazel-Fantasy? Isn't there an Amazing Armory already?! What is going on?!!" The answers will become clear shortly. In the mean time, you can count down to the relaunch at the Amazing Armory Ltd website.

Quick Hits: While You Were Out

>initiate Cygnetron 3000 auto blogging system...
>...command?...Cygnetron 3000 shutdown...password?...
>...password confirmed..returning control to human overlords...ha...ha...ha...

Very funny Cygnetron. Remind me to update your humor AI chip next time I'm out. That's the last time I purchase an 'auto blogging system' on Woot!

Greetings citizens! I'm now in the process of getting up to speed now that I'm back from vacation. In the grand tradition of cramming a lot of information into one bite-sized post, I give you 'Quick Hits - While You Were Out' edition...

As I'm sure you all know by now, LEGO.com updated their website recently. With that came new mini-sites for NinjaGO and Pharaoh's Quest. The NinjaGO site appears to have content that will unlock over time, while the Pharaoh's Quest teaser unveils itself in a similar fashion to what was used when the Atlantis line first launched. Both lines have strong custom potential. I'm also now convinced that JasBrick is a minifig designer for TLG, unbeknownst to him. Thanks to Brickset for getting me up to speed.

Bricktober is in full swing at Toys R Us. Not only are there great deals each week on LEGO items, there's a new vintage minifigure magnet available for LEGO purchases above $20 USD. We are now in week three and the minifig magnet this week is a City Fire Chief (picture via Toys N Bricks). Like other LEGO magnets, the figure can be removed from the base. If shopping online, be careful on how the various deals 'stack'. Brickset reports that the minifig promo and the BOGO 50% off deal may not 'play nice' together.

Nannan Z. has kicked off the 2010 Creations for Charity event in support of Toys for Tots. The various LEGO creations donated will be auctioned off to raise money for this worthy cause. It would be fantastic to see a good turnout from the custom minifig community. Click through to the link above for more details.

In customization news, Tin_7 was on a roll recently with new designs for his Last Airbender series and new Iron Man customs. Lots of great stuff to peruse and admire. Justin puts in a lot of effort into his work and it shows. He also has some fantastic designs for Quidditch uniform decals for houses other than Gryffindor and Slytherin.

Legoagogo was recently honored with a post on The Brothers Brick for his vignette focused on a Stormtrooper's wardrobe dilemma. Mark continues to 'wow' by combining great composition and lighting with wit and humor. Case in point? Take a look at his alternate view of the closing scene from Empire Strikes Back.

Before the break, I mysteriously mentioned 'the triumphant return of a familiar custom house'. The 'custom house' in question is Amazing Armory Ltd. and customizers like JasBrick and Pedro have been giving us a taste of what's to come. I've been talking with Hazel Tam, who heads up this outfit, and I'm happy to say that what he's shared with me about plans for the future are sure to astonish. All I can say for now is that these items will be available very soon, and you can purchase yours at United Armory and FireStar Toys (link above), to name a few.

Tiny Tactical has been on a roll recently. Not only have their latest products like the Panzerschreck, Handy Talkies, and TL-122 flashlights been selling out, they have recently announced even more new and innovative products. The new stuff includes a M9A1 anti-tank rifle grenade that works with a BrickArms M1 Garand Rifle, a minifig-scale wristwatch, and a cricket signal device. Pictures of the forthcoming items can be seen on Flickr. You can also visit the Tiny Tactical BrickLink store today.

There's a lot more to see from the past week on my Flickr favorites. I'm still working on catching up on all the great stuff out there. Apologies if I missed something in the process. I'll also be posting some new pics soon of recent BrickForge and TT deliveries.

That's all for now, citizens. Back to getting this show on the road...

Christo's Ki Adi Mundi Custom

Pedro shares another of Christo's great creations, this custom Ki Adi Mundi minifig from the Star Wars universe.

This is fantastic way to blend the high forehead of this Cerean Jedi master and classic LEGO styling. The face is also printed onto the piece and is not a decal.

If you like what you see here, check out Christo's eBay store. You can also check out Pedro's United Armory on BrickLink if you are in the US or Canada. It may not have this piece for sale, but you can get all the latest from Amazing Armory Ltd.

AMA Ltd. Sets The World on Fire in October

Woah! That's all I can say...Well, I actually can say more.

The pics above were originally seen on customminifig.co.uk and confirmed by Amazing Armory Ltd. These are new pieces coming out of the Hazel Fantasy sub-brand of Amazing Armory Ltd. Hazel Fantasy will be one of several new brands under the watchful eye of Hazel and AMA Ltd. Although there are still pretenders to the throne, all will be clear in October. This is likely to be one of the biggest launches in the custom market for some time.

We will have all of the details for you in due course. In the meantime, enjoy these new pieces and countdown the days until the October launch.

AMA Ltd. Sneek Peek - Cyborg Warrior

Pedro gives us a taste of the upcoming Cyborg Warrior pieces coming from Amazing Armory Ltd. Whispers suggest that the new AMA will launch in October, so you won't have to wait long. We'll be working to let you know where you can get these official designs from Hazel and company. You can be assured that if you are in the US, Pedro's United Armory will have the goods.
