Exciting News - JasBrick's New MinifigWorkshop.com

While reading through the comments of JasBrick's latest printed masterpiece, he revealed that his 'very expensive printer' with 'very expensive ink' will be used to provide items via his new website Minifig Workshop and FireStar Toys.

If you've been follow Jas' latest uploads on Flickr, you'll have seen the variety of printed designs he's been developing. This is very exciting as there are only a few places where you can get custom minifigures with print versus waterslide decals or paint!

It sounds like Minifig Workshop will also be a site where the budding customizer can come to learn new techniques and practice their craft. New customization tutorials are always welcome.

The site is still 'coming soon' but you can continue to check in at MinifigWorkshop.com or FireStar Toys for these great new items.

You can also check out Jas' Flickr stream to see all the designs he's been cooking up over the past few weeks.

UD Minifig Design Battle - Samurai Sho(w)down Winner

Congratulations go out to Burakki for winning the February UD Minfig Design Battle! The challenge was to select a character from the video game 'Samurai Shodown/Samurai Spirits', and craft a minifigure in it's likeness. Burakki opted for Oboro's Amazon as her subject.

Burakki will be receiving a gift card to FireStar Toys worth £25 which can be used on a wide variety of LEGO brand products, custom minifigures, or custom accessories.

I encourage everyone to check out all of the entries by visiting the UD Minfigure Design Battle page.

The Emperor is challenging all designers with this month's theme - 'Oh My Goddess...' The brief and details of the contest can be found at the UD Minfigure Design Battle page.

Congratulations once again to Burakki and my thanks to everyone who participated this month.

To those who are about to design, we of the Minifig Nation salute you!

March UD Minifig Design Brief - Oh My Goddess...

Three design battles have come to pass. The Emperor of Minifig Nation would like to know if you have the mettle for his next challenge...

The fourth minifig design battle has begun. The theme of this month’s challenge is...

“Oh My Goddess...”

The challenge is simple - you must depict a minifigure as a female diety with power beyond those of mortal...um...women. You may choose a goddess from an existing mythological pantheon such as Athena or Kali.

You may also ‘freestyle’ on this challenge. You can derive your own ‘goddess of war’ or ‘technology’ or ‘wisdom’; however, the figure you design and create must clearly emanate ‘godliness’ - no mortals need apply.

- You must depict the goddess as the main element of your design.
- This is a ‘goddess’ challenge so the minifigure must be a woman or female.
- You must state in the body of your entry who your character is supposed to represent (i.e. “Athena”) or what your ‘freestyle’ creation is the goddess of.
- The goddess should be a LEGO minifigure.

A couple of additional design ‘rules’ if you don’t want your entry disqualified...Although goddesses often don’t feel the need for clothing, yours should. The fact is we deal with a medium that is also a child’s toy so keep it clean. Also keep any depictions of gore or violence to a minimum - see the ‘Rules and Guidelines’ on the Flickr group page.

If you choose an existing female deity for your design, treat it with respect. We all have our own beliefs and this is a group of inclusion. Any entries that are blatantly putting down another religion through their design will be disqualified and their image removed from the pool. You will also be disqualified from further contests.

Other elements that will be looked upon favorably but are entirely optional include lighting, presentation, posing, and photography/digital effects. Do remember that the figures should be the primary focus of the composition and should not be overwhelmed by other design elements.

Although this is not a ‘customization-only’ contest, you may find many of the tutorials we’ve collected on the site to be helpful. There are also tutorials on photography, presentation, and digital effects.

Entries must be submitted to the UD Minifigure Design Battle Arena group on Flickr before 12:01 am EST April 16th, 2011. Entries submitted after this time will not be considered eligible. Remember to read the ‘Rules and Guidelines’ thread before submitting your entry.

This month’s winning prize is sponsored by FireStar Toys, where the victor will receive a gift card to FireStar worth £25 (approximately $40 USD**) which can be used on a wide variety of LEGO brand products, custom minifigures, or custom accessories from companies like BrickArms, Tiny Tactical, Si-Dan Toys, or Amazing Armory Ltd., to name a few. You can start planning on how to spend your winnings by visiting FireStar Toys today.

Questions about this contest or the rules should be submitted to Cygnet at uglyduck.bricklink@gmail.com.

To those who are about to design, we of the Minifig Nation salute you. Good luck!

*Please read the contest ‘Rules and Guidelines’ thread regarding views on depicting violence and other topics of a potentially serious nature.
**Exact value in US Dollars is dependent on the currency exchange rates at that time.

What? Did you think I was gone forever?

A couple of weeks back Shilo shared his Video Game Minifig Series. Duke Nukem was included in that group, but Shilo gave him a bit of an upgrade.

He modified the Lifeguard Collectible Minfigure by using Brasso to reduce some of her 'assets'. He's also added some great new guns, and changed the skin tone to classic yellow.

The harness Duke is wearing is from the Cobi line of LEGO compatible toys. If you can't find Cobi in your area, FireStar Toys has a collection of sets and parts.

You can see more of Shilo's custom creations, including his new series of James Bond figures, on his Flickr stream.

Sales and Deals Countdown

A few details on some deals that are coming to an end very soon...

First up we have the exclusive Sensei Wu key chain from LEGO.com on orders over $75 USD/CAN or 50 GBP. To date this is the only way to get this Spinjitzu master as a key chain. Offer ends at the end of the month. I never confirmed if the key chain was automatically added to the order, or if you needed a code (it doesn't indicate that you do at LEGO.com). Please make certain it's added before you checkout. (US| Canada| UK)

Speaking of deals ending on January 31st, the 10% voucher/coupon code for FireStar Toys is set to expire. FireStar Toys has a wide variety of LEGO minifigures and custom accessories, so much in fact that you can mix and match products from different custom houses without all those extra shipping charges. Did you like the BrickTW items featured in today's review? Firestar doesn't yet carry those items, but do have many of the 2010 product line available. Just use voucher/coupon code 'KV882256' at checkout to get your discount at FireStar Toys today.

The last sale comes to us from Toys N Bricks. It seems those $3 LEGO sets have been further marked down to $1! I personally checked out a local K-Mart, but no luck. Hey, with $1 LEGO sets, it's worth taking a look.

That's all for now. Happy bargain hunting!

Special Edition Armor as Prize for Hazel Contest

Hazel has been hinting at having a contest relating to Halo soon. The prizes? These very limited, trans blue Emile armor sets. The great thing is you can paint the helmets and leave the visor clear for a more traditional look, or just leaving them as is for cool effect. Details on the contest are forthcoming.

Are you drooling over these molds? Pedro still has the dark blueish gray ABS versions for sale at United Armory. If you're in the US or Canada, you're in luck so why not take a look. The space marine helmets appear to be quite popular - there are only 15 left in stock!

I don't know for certain, but I would anticipate FireStar Toys will also be receiving some of these down the road. Again, I'll announce it if and when they do.

UD Minifig Battle - The Sinister Toymaker Winner

I want to take the time to thank everyone who participated in this most recent UD Minifig Desgin Battle contest - The Sinister Toymaker. I appreciate everyone's efforts and hope to see you back in the arena soon.

You can see all of the Sinister Toymakers by visiting the UD Minifig Design Battle Flickr page.

The Emperor bids me to remind you that his second challenge has been announced (The Paranormal Gunslinger), and  his Excellency looks forward to all of the coming designs for this month. You can find the next design brief, rules, and more details on the UD Minifig Design Battle Flickr page.

Huge FireStar Toys Sale and More

UK based FireStar Toys is currently having a huge sale on hundreds of items on their site. They need to make way for all the fantastic LEGO products and customs slated for 2011, including the Brick Command items we just reviewed!

What's more, since FireStar Toys buys from all the great custom houses around the world, like Amazing Armory Ltd., Si-Dan, BrickArms, Tiny Tactical, and now BrickForge, you can mix and match accessories and not worry about separate shipping and handling fees. Case in point...

You really like the Brick Command Wing Sword but worry how a Bat'leth would fare in a firefight. No worries, just pick up Federation issue phasers from either BrickArms or BrickForge too!

Do you want to expand your Spinjitsu master's arsenal? In addition to the Brick Command stars you could also pick up the BrickForge Sai or any of the Si-Dan Ninja accessories.

As one of my personal heroes, Ron Popeil, is often fond of saying, "but wait, there's more".  Now through the end of January you can use coupon/voucher code 'KV882256' to get an additional 10% off your order at checkout.

So hurry on down to FireStar Toys today. Offers are limited (not really), and operators are standing by (sort of)...

Product Review - Brick Command Wing Sword & Throwing Stars

Today we a have a short review of two items from new custom house Brick Command. Brick Command currently has a small selection of custom minifigure accessories and brick-built models. We will be covering the accessories they currently have for sale - the Wing Sword and Throwing Stars.

The Brick Command Wing Sword is modeled after the Klingon long sword or, bat'leth. The 'sword of honor' was the preferred weapon of Klingon martial artists and resembled a double bladed crescent with four points and three handles.

The Wing Sword accessory measures 6 cm from tip to tip. There are three 'handles' where the minifigure can grip. The distancing of the two outer handles allow the minifig to hold the sword in a double handed grip (as shown above). All connections with the minifigure's hand were firm and there were no concerns or issues with breakage. The wing sword is made of ABS plastic and currently comes in a silver color only.

The Brick Command Throwing Stars resemble the  Japanese shuriken - a hand held weapon often used for slashing, stabbing, or throwing. Shuriken were often made from a variety of common materials and took many shapes.

The Brick Command items have the appearance of a flat four-pointed  star. There is a ball on one of the points that acts as the connection point with the minifigure hand. The ball most easily slips into the top of the hand. Once the connection is established, you can rotate the star in the figures' hand similar to a ball joint. This allows for a wide variety of configurations during play.

Once the item had been placed into the minifigure hand, there were no connection issues. The Thowing Stars are made of ABS plastic and currently come in a gray/gunmetal color only.

Although I cannot claim the original credit for this idea, a nice little play feature is that the tip of the Throwing Stars can balance on the inside of the LEGO issue flowers to resemble a wound. This poor karateka never saw it coming...

Overall these are recommended items with quality construction and great play value. The Throwing Stars are especially timely with the new Ninjago series just being released. Head on over to BrickCommand.net or FireStar Toys to pick yours up today!

Quick Hits: Holiday Traveling

Doing a bit of traveling to visit relatives this weekend, but there are a few items to report.

Remember those great film vignettes that Alex Eylar was putting together? Well I guess at least one of them was used for a story on The New York Times website. Very nice! Not only that, he's selling many of those creations as prints via Imagekind. Check it out when you get a chance.

Huw scores again with news of individual Series 4 Collectible Minifigure pics. These are via Brandora, a website that's offered up similar pics of earlier series. Although rendered, it gives you a closer look at each figure to see what they have to offer. I'll definitely be using these once we start our Series 4 guide entries in the near future. Thanks Brickset!

Hopefully our combatants aren't finding this month's Minifig Design Battle brief too difficult - The Sinister Toymaker. If you have any questions, just drop us a line (uglyduck.bricklink@gmail.com) or post a question on the group page.

Also don't forget that you can get 10% any order at FireStar Toys, now through the end of January 2011. Just click the banner at the top of the page and enter coupon/voucher code 'KV882256' at check-out. It might be a good way to get supplies for the challenge.

That's all for now, citizens. Have a great weekend.

FireStar Toys Now Official Reseller of BrickForge

The folks at FireStar Toys contacted me yesterday to let me know that they are now an official reseller for BrickForge custom minifig items.

It may still be a couple of weeks before FireStar has inventory to sell, but this is great news for folks in the UK and Europe. This likely means less wait time for your orders arrive, and possibly better shipping terms. Once FireStar has BrickForge items ready to sell, we will definitely let you know.

In the meantime, check out all of the great minifig items and accessories available at FireStar Toys today! Also, remember that if you use voucher/coupon code 'KV882256' at checkout, you can receive 10% off your order through January 2011.

JasBrick Custom Minifigs on Sale at FireStar

A new lot of JasBrick's custom minifigs went up for sale today at FireStar Toys. A wide variety of characters to choose from. UK based FireStar does ship internationally, so if you would like to own one of these custom pieces here is your chance.

I e-mailed Jas earlier today and he mentioned that although they didn't go on sale with this lot, his Steamtroopers and Hawkmen should be up for sale in the near future.
