Gizmodo Delivers the Hi-Res Goods for 2011 LEGO

Gizmodo ran an article last night that featured tons of big, hi-res images of all the 2011 LEGO playthemes announced to date. This includes Star Wars, Ninjago, Alien Conquest, City, Kingdoms, Pirates of the Caribbean...the list goes on an on. LEGO Harry Potter seems to be the one missing piece.

Becuase the hi-res images are so big, you get great shots of all the minifigures. You can find the article at the Gizmodo website.

A big thanks to the folks at The Brick Blog who pointed me in the right direction.

Quick Hits: New Sets, Plan B, and More Arealight

A few bits of news coming across the wire today...

Toys N Bricks has more set pics for LEGO Cars (not the Duplo sets), CITY Harbor, Harry Potter, and the Sith Nightspeeder (above). Aside from more pics of the new LEGO Star Wars figs, there's not much else to report. Does anyone else think that the Hogwarts set is a little wierd?

UPDATE: A Modular Life has more LEGO Cars, Star Wars, Kingdoms, and Technic set pics collected from Kris Kelvin (he's the Eurobricks member who has been providing the shots). The Star Wars sets shown include Darth Maul's Sith Infiltrator, the Podracers, and Republic Frigate. The Kingdoms set is theMill Village Raid and has some great views of the printed horses, goats, chickens, and pigs!

Brickset correspondent Yellowcastle shares a 'Series B' dot code sheet for Series 3 Collectible Minifigures. We had heard rumors that the dot codes may have been changed with later shipments. Now you have the ability to find the figs you are looking for. The packages this pertains to should have a 'B' on in the batch code along the bottom where the dots can be found. You can find the form in all its glory on Yellowcastle's Flickr stream.

Finally, we have more details on the Arealight printed helmets. Bluce has been so kind to put up more shots of each helmet in 360 views (Hey! That's my job...just kidding). This is a fantastic way to see as much of these great products before you buy. I can tell you from personal experience that the helmet molds are fantastic. Bluce also states that he's still working on the Mando helmets which he will try to make available very soon. I highly recommend checking out the 360 pics of the printed products on the Arealight Flickr stream.

That's all for now. More as it becomes available...

Minifigure Review - Police Minifigure Collection

Starting this year we will be showcasing minifigures in a one off fashion - we will review them separately from a larger overall play theme. They will be cataloged in a 'miscellaneous' section of the minifigure guides. This will be the first of those reviews focusing on the minifigures and elements of LEGO City set 7279, Police Minifigure Collection.

The overall set contains 57 pieces in total including four minifigures, a minifig scale dog, and several unique elements. We will start with the two police minifigures.

The first police figure contains elements that have appeared with many minifigures in the past, including the helmet, head and legs. The torso, however, features new print on both the front and back. The back of the torso has the word 'POLICE', a nice feature for creating SWAT teams or adding diversity to your tactical police force. I've already seen a few people switching the arms around on this torso to have the 'POLICE' on the front of the fig.

The second police figure is similar in that many of the individual parts have appeared with previous figs. The white cap with the short brim style is a relatively new color for this part, first appearing in sets in 2010.

Although not a minifigure, there is a third member of this miniature police force - a german shepard. A new dog mold with a nice facial print, this hound has a footprint (literally) of 2x3 studs. Similar to other dogs of the past, it has a single, open stud  on the back. The head is also stationary and does not move.

Now that we've covered the 'cops' lets turn our eye to the 'robbers'. The first thief is similar to the police in that most of the elements (hat, head, and legs) have been readily available in other sets of the past. The torso does feature a new print. resembling a light blueish gray jacket over a striped prison shirt. On the back of the torso, the jacket has a cinch.

The second thief does not have any new or unique parts, as all the items have been available in other sets before. Now that we've covered the minifigures, we can turn our attention to several unique elements.

There are four key elements we will discuss, the backpack/bag, crowbar, flashlight, and handcuffs. Although I originally thought the flashlight was a new element, it was just a black light saber handle with a trans yellow round plate. The hand cuffs are made of the newer, rubbery material (2008) but they have been widely available since that time.

The crowbar is a brand new element to the 2011 City Police sets. The crowbar comes in red and measures 3.1 cm or approximately 4L in length. Both ends are tapered, with one of the ends being curved. Prior to this part, the only way to get a minifig compatible crowbar was through custom house BrickForge.

The back pack or bag is also a brand new element this year. Attaching on the minifig via the head post, this back pack has an open cavity that allows you to place items inside. As shown here you can fit two 1x2 tiles or similar sized objects inside (like the two $100 bills that come with the set). There's a connection hole on the bottom of the bag as seen above. The bag is only available in dark tan to date.

The remaining parts in the set go towards building an ATM unit and police ATV, both pictured above. Given that this is primarily a minifigure blog, we won't go into too much detail here. We will just share the final, constructed models.

All in all, this is a nice small set providing some unique elements not previously available. The double sided police and criminal torsos, the new dog, as well as the back pack and crowbar elements are the real draws here.

This set's MSRP is $9.99 and should be widely available at retailers who carry LEGO brand products world wide. You can also pick this item up at LEGO Shop at Home (US| Canada| UK) today!

Scenes from a LEGO Store: Ninjago is Go!

So I traveled up to my local LEGO Store with my two boys today. I don't know if Sundays are typically a busy day, but the place was packed. Ninjago was the big feature and hard to miss with a large pagoda shaped display greeting you right as you walk in the door.

One thing that caught my eye was that the Sensei Wu keychain was not for sale, and truly was an exclusive promotion (free with a purchase over $75). The Ninjago magnet sets were in too, and the sales people confirmed that they were glued to the bases as well.

I was also able to find the LEGO Education Community Minifigure set retailing for approximately $50. There are quite a few nice elements in the set, but at that price, I'd rather wait for the Fairy Tale and Historical set which wasn't in.

I also picked up a LEGO Club Jr. magazine for the boys and February store calendar . There was a Ninjago coloring page which featured Kai and an unseen skellie villian named Kruncha - perhaps he'll debut in wave two of the series?

February also has a couple of interesting dates according to the store calendar. You can score a free City Police motorcycle set with a $25 USD purchase on the 8th and 9th. There's also a free City Police boat with $35 USD purchase all month long. Finally, the calendar states new minifig build elements will be available around mid month, but no news on what those might be.

Not much else to report. The clearance sale items were dwindling (they must have made a ton of those Star Wars Pirate Tanks). The city Police Minifigure packs were sold out - the more I see elements from this set the more I like it.

That's all to report on this trip. More as it becomes available...

Educational Minifigure Set Reviews on Eurobricks

Well speak of the devil. It seems that Eurobricks member SilentMode was able to score both of the new LEGO Education/Dacta Minifigure sets. He has two reviews up right now, so you can see what all the fuss is (or isn't) about. The Fairy Tale and Historic set review is on the Eurobricks front page. The review contains a link to the City version.

LEGO City NASA Moon Buggy

I'm still not sure what to call these new LEGO City/Space sets that have partnered with NASA (are they LEGO City, LEGO City Space, LEGO City NASA...I don't know!). Any who, pictures surfaced over the weekend of the impulse set of the line, Space Moon Buggy

Expected to cost around $6 USD, it comes with one of the white Atlantis headgear with gold visor (Emile fan's rejoice). You also get a fig and a chainsaw blade element. Not bad for a value set.

Even if the gold visor is the only element of interest, the low price of this set should ensure that BrickLink will be awash with them, keeping prices low.

You can check out more about this set at Brickset and Toys N Bricks.

New Elements in 2011 LEGO City Sets

Brickset reported earlier today that ToysRUs.com has some pics of the 2011 LEGO City police sets. Big deal, right? Well...

As you can see from the picture of set 7279, LEGO City Police Minifigure Collection, there are some new elements of interest including crowbars, a backpack that can hold items, a flashlight, and a dog with print resembling a German Shepherd. All this for $9.99 USD. Not so 'meh' after all. Nice to see TLG extending the idea of 'minifigure packs' into other lines.

If you would like to see more, then head on over to Brickset or ToysRUs.com.

Quick Hits: Big News Around the Minifig Nation

It looks like it's going to be one of those mornings...in a good way.

Eurobricks member Klaus-Dieter claims to have had a peek at the 2011 retailer catalogue. No pictures have been shared, so I'm couching these as rumors for now.

First up are early details on Series 3 and 4 of Collectible Minifigures. It would seem that Series 3 will debut in January 2011 and may include the following:
  • Fisherman
  • Ferrari driver
  • Mummy
  • Sumo Wrestler
  • Female Dancer
  • Samurai
  • Hawaiian Girl
  • Baseball Player
  • Fantasy Elf
  • Native American Chief
  • Alien
  • Male Singer
  • Doctor/Surgeon
  • Gorilla
  • Snowboarder
The sixteenth figure was not seen. A Series 4 release date is set for April 2011, but no details on its contents.

There may be a new theme that mixes collectible trading cards and minifigures called NinjaGO. The details were sparse other than 'it has ninja minifigs' and 'it's not a historical theme'. TLG recently announced a collectible trading card game in conjunction with LEGO Universe, so this doesn't seem too far fetched.

Although I typically overlook City themes, it would appear the classic Space theme hinted at during Steve Witt's presentation at BrickFair will be a City subtheme. Much of the set descriptions sounded more like Earth-based command centers like NASA, instead of being set in space itself. There were also details about a new Police subtheme (how much crime actually happens in LEGO City?).

There were some additional details on 2011 Star Wars and Atlantis but they lacked a lot of information.

Also on Eurobricks member Omnicron had a more detailed review with pics of the BrickForge booth from BrickFair. There are more pics of the new 2010 product, as well as details around new production colors. The biggest news item was the The Forge and customizer Shmails will be combining forces to offer custom figs! There may even be a new website/store forthcoming to sell them. There's an entire set of pictures you can view of these new, limited-edition figs here.

More to come later today citizens...

Decoding Messages from BrickFair

So Joe Meno is at BrickFair right now and posting updates on Facebook. Last night was the Q&A with Steve Witt of The LEGO Group.

Given that these were brief updates without a lot of details, I'm listing these are 'rumors' for now. I'm certain after this weekend more details will be available. Here's a listing of the posts relevant to minifigures...

Both Castle and City Advent calendars will be available in the US. In the past only the City themed calendars were available in the US forcing fans to pay high prices in the secondary market for the Castle theme.

Possible reissue of Classic Space theme. I'm uncertain if this would be a Neo-Classic Space theme or very true to the sets from the 80's. Here's hoping for lots of minfig goodness.

Minifigure elements will be unique to the minifigs only. This one left me scratching my head as The Skater's and Cheerleader's hair pieces are scheduled to appear on LEGO Harry Potter figures. I'm guessing we're talking pom-poms, laser guns, spartan helmets, and the like.

LEGO Pirates of The Caribbean is confirmed for next year. So although the Captain Jack Sparrow that snuck into Comic Con was a prototype, we should see these around a summer release with the new movie.

I'm not anticipating more announcements, as the convention is winding down tomorrow.

New Magnet Sets Appearing at LEGO Stores

LEGO Star Wars Kit Fisto Barris Offee Captain Jag Magnet SetThere are two new magnet sets scheduled for release. The first is a Star Wars number featuring Kit Fisto, Barris Offee, and Captain Jag. Barriss Offee has been a hot item on the secondary market. The average BrickLink price for the month of May was around $16 USD, only appearing in the limited edition set 8091, Republic Swamp Speeder. This will be a great opportunity to score three SW figs that have only been available in pricier sets.

LEGO Female Magnet Set 852948The second magnet set is currently showing up in LEGO stores in Europe. Magnet set 852948 is a collection of female minifigures from Agents, Pirates, and City/Town. The figures are specifically Dyna-Mite (agt024), Pirate Woman (pi101), and a City/Town figure that may be new.

It would seem that LEGO is making an effort to produce more female minifigures. In Jonathan Bender's book, LEGO A Love Story, he throws out that there's only 1 female minifigure for every 18 male ones. Upcoming sets like Harry Potter look like they are trying to narrow the gap.

New Sets Appearing at US Stores

Heads up citizens. Word on the BrickLink forums is that some of the new unlicensed LEGO themes like Kingdoms, Space Police III, City, and World Racers are now appearing in LEGO Stores across the US.

I just called my local store and they confirmed. Call yours today!

There are reports that Toys R Us also has some of these sets in the bricks and mortar store, plus ToysRUs.com has several sets listed now for sale. Brickset has a forum member who has also claimed to have purchased a box of Collectible Minfigures from TRU! If true, then the minifig invasion of the US has begun!

LEGO 2009 Annual Report

Yesterday, LEGO released its annual report for 2009. Overall it was a good year for the company. LEGO Star Wars and City continue to be the stars of the company. It also sounds like they have high hopes for the new line of LEGO board games after strong performance in the UK and Germany.

The hidden gem however was their annual magazine called The Brick. It covers little slices-of-life across the company for the public and investors. There are several behind the scenes pics and cool concept sketches from the LEGO Atlantis and upcoming Hero Factory lines.

There are also little facts about LEGO sprinkled throughout. The most interesting can be found on page 60. According to a study run by NPD, a market research firm, adult fans of LEGO (AFOLs) account for a little under 5% of sales. This is the first "firm" number I've seen regarding AFOL sales contribution, and much lower than earlier estimates I've heard reported previously.

What does this mean for minifigures? Well I think we can expect to see more LEGO Star Wars in the future (314 minifigures and counting), and City is here to stay. There was little said about the upcoming collectors series or future licenses. I guess we'll have to just keep watching and waiting.
