BrickLink Report: April 2010

BrickLink logo
As you may or may not know the Ugly Duckling started as a store on BrickLink in 2010. We aim to specialize in LEGO minifigures and try to stand apart by including the accessories (guns, lightsabers, etc.) that come with the figures.

As part of these efforts, I've started to keep a record of some statistics from the catalog. Please do not take information I share here as 'advice' on what to buy or sell on BrickLink. Like many things on this blog, I just do it in the spirit of fun. Also keep in mind, aside from hosting my store I have no other personal or professional relationship with the folks at BrickLink, fine people that they are.

Every month I will highlight a few interesting tidbits and factoids that I've found during the process. These facts only hold true for minifigures released in 2010. So who controlled the action in March?...
  • The minifigure bought most often (based on quantity) in March 2010 continues to be the plain Green Army Man from set 7595. Quantity sold? 813 (up 44% from February).
  • Last month the stormtrooper with pauldron from set 8092 (Luke's Landspeeder) was the next highest quantity sold at 239, but fell in March. This was likely due to set 8092 being out-of-stock in many places. Who held the number two spot in March? The Hoth Rebel Trooper from Star Wars battle packs (266 sold in March 2010).
  • The TIE Defender pilot continues to have the highest average price (paid) for a minifigure in March 2010 at $19.36 USD.
  • Who are the top three 'most wanted' minifigs in at the beginning of April? Toy Story Alien (82), Atlantis Squid Warrior (82), and Star Wars Barris Offee (67).
Some other interesting goings on...
  • March finally saw a buyer for one of the white Boba Fetts that was handed out at Toy Fair 2010. Sale price? $499.99 USD.
  • 202 minifigure-scale pigs were sold in March at an average price of $4.47 USD. This was the most of any new minifigure animal introduced in 2010; however, the other three animals (ostrich, camel, Persian horse) were only on sale for the last few days in March as part of the Prince of Persia line.
  • Speaking of Prince of Persia, early sales number would show that humble Dastan (the one who kept his shirt on) was sold most often with 64 units sold. The PoP figures with the highest average price? Nizam at $9.99 USD.
  • Have you ever wondered what the impact of magnet sets happens to be on minifigure prices? Well the Toy Story 3 magnet set debuted near the beginning of March. The set had minifigures for the Alien, Woody, and Buzz. All three figures dropped around 40% on average from their prices in January 2010. Prior to this prices had only dropped by 20% of original at most! The lesson? Be mindful of when previously hard to get figures become available through magnet sets. If we start to widely see the Admiral Ackbar magnet set in LEGO Stores in April, be prepared for price drops in Ackbar, Tantive IV Leia, and C-3PO.
That's all for now, citizens. Join us next month when we have more details on Prince of Persia sets and perhaps we'll start to see Toy Story 3 minifigures hit stores!
