Tiny Tactical Packs and Radio

Steve has more great custom accessories soon to hit the shelves of Tiny Tactical. There are three new items pictured above:
  • ULS - Ultra lite strike pack (Dark Tan, Black and OD Green)
  • TDA- 3 day assault pack (Dark Tan, Black and OD Green)
  • MSRV2- Tactical Radio in pouch (Black/Dark Tan, Black/Black and Black/OD Green)
The packs may come in two 'flavors' - one which attached to the TT vests, and another that attaches to the fig via a neck piece.

The radios can't be removed from the pouch, but will look great as an accent item on your custom figure.

No dates yet on when these will be available, but be assured that we will let you know.

Many of the Tiny Tactical accessories sell out quickly, so check their BrickLink storefront often for news and updates.

    Tiny Tactical Restock Today (3/11/11)

Just a reminder that Tiny Tactical is planning on re-stocking their shelves around 2pm PST today (3/11). The BA-G36 upgrades, gas masks, and flame thrower kits should also be available at that time.

Don't forget to visit Tiny Tactical on BrickLink in just a few hours!

    Tiny Tactical is Back!

Well they never really went anywhere, but Steve has returned with new custom accessories. First up we have the flamethrower kit that was shown as a prototype back in September 2010. The final product looks great in olive drab green and will hopefully be up on Tiny Tactical before the end of next week.

But wait, there's more. Steve also has upgrade accessories for the BrickArms G36 including a drum magazine, grenade launcher, launcher sight, and folding stock. The only question I have is where can you get BA G36's, as they appear to be sold out at BrickArms.com?!

You can see more pictures on Flickr. You can also check out the Tiny Tactical store on BrickLink.

UPDATE: Badger clarifies in the comments on a few places where you can pick up the G36 (also known as the 'assault carbine'). It can also be found at FireStar Toys.

    Quick Hits: Weekend Edition

It always surprises me how on any given day in Minifig Nation you might have a wave of news hit you out of the blue. Let's get to it...

It looks like BrickTW has now posted their new arms designs to their BrickLink store. Some real stand-outs for me are the Quin Long shield and their various arrow designs that can be held in the minifig's hand. The body wear is available as well. Only the new head gear to go and then the whole, new line-up will be ready to order. Expect the full line up by early next week.

Hazel has been updating the status of the new Amazing Armory website via Flickr. There are still a few more details that need to addressed before it goes live, but rest assured, we will let you know once it does. Website or no, we've already told you that FireStar Toys has a supply of the new Hazel Fantasy guns. I have also heard that by tonight, US/Canadian customers can start to order product from United Armory! I believe it's Pedro's goal to have the items on the store either later tonight or tomorrow.

In other AMA related news, check-out these prototype pictures of the new shields with paint! These are absolutely amazing...no pun intended. When Hazel said he wanted to up the bar in minifig custom items, he wasn't kidding.

Although not new news itself, I thought I would post this pic of the Tiny Tactical watches (which I've not done before). Nicely detailed items that can give your fig that 'extra' touch. You can see more about these on the Tiny Tactical BrickLink store

A couple of bits on the site and the store. I've added a page tab now for 'Customization Tutorials' (you can see it in the blue bar at the top). These are links to various articles and tutorials on minifig customization techniques. I was always concerned that these got lost in the sidebar, but now they live on their own page for the world to see. As I say on the page, if you have tutorials you know of or would like to submit a tutorial to the site (hint, hint) I would be more than happy to host it. As I view this site to be a resource of the entire LEGO minifigure community, if you have suggestions or comments, please drop me a line (uglyduck.bricklink@gmail.com).

Some people ask me, "Why is the site called The Ugly Duckling at BrickLink?" Well, a little over a year ago I opened a store on said site focused on selling LEGO minifigures. That led to Facebook, and then, finally, starting this blog. So it really all started with the store. Speaking of the store, I have dropped my international shipping rate to $3.00 USD (originally $3.25). I have a sense this was a barrier for some potential international customers. If  you haven't taken a look at the store, please take the time for a quick peek. We have several Series 2 Collectible Minifigures for $2.99 USD, including accessories and stands. There are also a few Star Wars and Harry Potter items available. Shipping is flat rate when using USPS First Class, so you can buy all you want and the shipping fee stays the same.

That's all for now, citizens, enjoy your weekend. More news as it happens...

    Some Site Updates

I've been doing  some housecleaning here on the site. I've gone back and tried to correct and update the minifigure guide for LEGO Harry Potter. Some image and information fixes, as well as updating which figures will be in set 10217, Diagon Alley. As with any of the guide entries, if you notice an error, discrepancy, or out of date information, please just drop me a line and let me know. I'll fix any issues as soon as I can.

I have also moved the 'Retailer's Bazaar' section lower on the sidebar, as it had been starting to crowd out the main site information. The affiliate sites will continue to remain at the top of the sidebar. I have also added another banner to the bazaar, BrickTW, in advance of their new product launch later this week.

As you may have seen in the previous post, I've started to collect the product reviews for Tiny Tactical. The post entry below will be updated over time, but if you ever want to make a quick jump to it, go to the 'Product Review' tab at the top of the page. There you will find links to all of the product reviews we've conducted to date. We have one more TT review planned for the near future, then we will branch out to reviews of Arealight and Amazing Armory Ltd. product. If there are certain products you would like to see reviewed from any custom house, just let me know and I'll see what I can do.

Given that I'm moving and shifting items around, if you experience any issues while viewing the site, please just drop me a line.

That's all for now, citizens, more to come once it's available.

Product Review - Tiny Tactical Vest, Handy Talkie, and Flashlight

We continue our review of products from custom house Tiny Tactical. Today we are looking at three products, the STV1 Tactical Vest, the SCR-536 Walkie Talkie, and the TL-122 Flashlight.

The tactical vest has been used in a wide variety of military applications for storage of key field gear. Some tactical vests also have a ballistics armor component to them. The Tiny Tactical STV1 vest doesn't appear to be based on a specific model, but can add nice 3D elements to military minifigures. The Tactical Vest fits quite well over a standard torso with the connection occurring with the head post. The color of the tactical vest is olive drab (OD) green and has nice, detailed pouches on the front of the piece. The back has a couple large rectangular pieces, but are largely smooth. None of the pouches are functional (i.e. no openings) and there are no connections or clips for accessories. One of the things I look for in body gear is the ability of the arms to move freely from front to back. This was not an issue, as the footprint of the vest fits well inside the torso.

The SCR-536 Walkie Talkie, or 'handy talkie', is one of the first hand-held, self-contained radios that saw wide use by the US Signal Corps during World War II. The Tiny Tactical version is 2.7 cm long (1.1 cm of the radio body and 1.6 cm the antenna), 3 mm wide and comes in OD green. The body is made out of thermoset plastic while the antenna cap is reinforced with carbon fiber.  The antenna is made of a reinforced composite material. The part can be held in the minifig hand so that the receiver is either pointing out or in, toward the minifigure's head and face (see above photo). If the piece is held where the receiver is facing out from the minifigure, it will need to be 'slid' into position for a firm connection. This is accomplished by a small rectangular piece that extends from the main body of the radio and likely represents the press-to-talk switch. The part resembles its real-life counterpart quite well. The antenna appears to be fragile, but as we mentioned Tiny Tactical has reinforced this part for added durability. I would still not recommend 'rough play' with this piece to remain on the safe side.

The TL-122 Flashlight was an Army standard issue, right angle flashlight used widely in World War II. The Tiny Tactical replica is 9 mm long and made of thermoset plastic. The part is OD green with the 'light' itself hand-painted silver. The piece can only be held in the minifigure hand while facing out. This is achieved by having a small piece of rectangular plastic sticking out from the main body of the flashlight, allowing the part to slide into place. When the flashlight is turned sideways, however, the connection is lost and could fall out of the minifigure's hand. Again, as with many of the Tiny Tactical pieces, this resembles the real-life item well.

All three parts were found to be of good quality with firm connections all around. Although I wouldn't recommend 'rough play' with the radio, I experienced no issues during the review. All three of these items are recommended buys.

Quick Hits: Did I Miss a Day?!

Feels like a Tuesday today with all of the news floating around the interwebs. Let's shake off that candy hangover and get down to business.

BrickArms launched their October 2010 release at the 11th hour last night. Lots of cool new products and even a custom minifig design. The launch includes the following:
    • Brodie Helmet
    • Modern Combat Helmet
    • Shaun UK Zombie Fighter with custom printed torso
    • Spy Pack with Exclusive Limited Edition Golden Gun
    • Zombie Defense Pack 2010.1
    • World at War Chrome Pack
    • Modern Chrome Pack 2.0
    • Scifi Chrome Pack 2.0
    • Blade Chrome Pack 2.0
Even I haven't had time to peruse all the fun so head on over to the BrickArms store and check it out.

Tiny Tactical will be restocking their shelves today at around 5 pm PST (they are located in British Columbia, Canada). On tap for returns are the TT-RPzB54 Panzerschrecks, Guns (KSV, SBR-M4, G18), tactical vests, TL-122 flashlights and Handie-Talkies, Minifig watches in (Gold, Stainless, Black, OD Green, yellow, red, blue, dark grey, dark tan), M9A1 Rifle Grenades and Crickets. Good thing too as I'm re-releasing the Panzerschreck review on Eurobricks today and have a new review ready to launch.

We should expect some new news from Amazing Armory Ltd. and BrickTW very soon. I noticed this morning that the Amazing Armory site still shows the countdown clock, and no word yet from BrickTW. I'll let you know if I hear more from either vendor.

    More as it becomes available...

Product Review - Tiny Tactical Panzerschreck Set

The following is the first review in a series for custom minifig house Tiny Tactical. Tiny Tactical has been storming the scene with a variety of new and innovative custom military pieces. To learn more about TT you can check out our previous customizer spotlight article on the company.

The focus of this review is on the Panzerschreck set which is composed of four parts - the rocket launcher, blast shield, backpack, and rockets. All of these items can be purchased separately or together on the Tiny Tactical BrickLink store (link below).

    Panzerschreck Reference Photo
The Panserschreck was the popular name of the Raketenpanzerbüchse which was often shortened to RPzB. Used by the Germans against Allied tanks in World War II, their name roughly translates to 'tank terror'. Although a reusable, shoulder-fired rocket launcher, the Panzerschreck emitted a toxic black smoke after firing, giving away the operator's position and requiring them to move to another location. The shape of the weapon and the black smoke earned the Panzerschreck another nickname by German soldiers, the Ofenrohr or 'Stove Pipe'.

Backpack Details with and without Rockets
We first turn our attention to the backpack which can house up to three of the RPzBGr 4322 Rockets. The backpack is made of a brown thermoset plastic. It connects to the minifig much in the same way a standard backpack would, by a connection that fits around the head post. There are three holes near the bottom of the piece which allow the tips of the rockets to sit, and three notches where the rocket shafts can rest. The rockets to not clip into the backpack, but instead sit levered into place. The rockets will not fall out of the pack, but can move around when repositioning your figures. Steve from Tiny Tactical indicated that these rockets could be glued to each of the three notches, if desired, but then couldn't be removed easily after glued. I found the backpack to fit firm and snug on the minifigure without any issues. The thermoset plastic seemed quite nice and durable.

    Rocket-Propelled Grenades in Hand
We've already mentioned the RPzBGr 4322 Rockets which can sit in the backpack housing. Each rocket is made of thermoset plastic with a carbon fiber support structure. The rockets do not attach to the Panzershreck itself and do not have a connection point at which a minifigure can 'grab'. You can rest a rocket in the minifigure hand, however, when the arms are extended horizontally as seen in the picture above. The detailing on the rockets are wonderful and resemble the real-life item quite well. Again, I didn't see any issues regarding durability of this item during the review.

    Panzerschreck 360 View
We now turn to the main piece of this set, the Panzershreck rocket launcher. The rocket launcher arrived with the blast shield attached using an industrial grade glue to bond the shield in place. Both the rocket launcher and blast shield are made out of dark tan thermoset plastic. The launcher is further reinforced with carbon fiber. Both pieces are dark tan in color. As you can see from the 360 product shot above, the piece is nicely detailed, especially the blast shield, and resembles the real-life item incredibly well. I felt the piece had just the right level of detail while remaining suitable for minifig soldiers. The launcher fits firmly in the minifigure hand and extends nicely over the shoulder. A detail that I appreciated was how the launcher's two sights and the hole in the blast shield aligned.

    Blast Shield On and Off
As we mentioned earlier the blast shield will come attached via glue if the rocket launcher and blast shield are ordered together. With the blast shield glued in place you cannot easily remove it for other custom applications. The attachment is firm, but care must still be taken when handling the piece. I was testing to see if the main shaft of the rocket launcher could be used as a connection point with the minifigure's hand (note that it can, but you will have to use some force to make the connection). In the process of doing this, the shield came off (see picture above). The shield remained intact and could easily be reattached and positioned; however, do keep in mind that rough treatment could cause the same thing to happen for you. I contacted another collector who bought several of these sets. He confirmed that he didn't have this issue with any of the 11 sets he purchased. Is it possible that the blast shield could unintentionally become detached? Yes. Is it probable with proper handling? No.

In summary I feel all items associated with the Tiny Tactical Panzerschreck set to be nicely detailed custom items that give your minifigure armies some historical authenticity. Rough play is not recommended, but otherwise I found the pieces to be of good quality. Overall this is a recommended buy and a nice addition to your minifigure World War II arsenal.

Quick Hits: Cobra, The Weasleys, and Tiny Tactical

I came across a couple of things on Flickr I thought I'd share. The first is this concept for a Cobra Trooper from Roaglaan. A blue BrickArms Stahlhelm is a key piece in this concept, that and Roaglaan's decals, of course. It looks like Roaglann will have to paint one as blue isn't a currently option. Maybe Will and Badger can revisit their inner 'children of the 80s' and see to adding this color to future production runs.

The other nice piece are some blending of current and future TLG minifigs and custom pieces to bring the entire Weasley clan to minifigure form. Justin (aka Tin_7) really has some nice pieces for representing the three 'lost' Weasley boys, Bill, Charlie, and Percy. I'd argue that Fluer Delacour (Bill's wife) would round things out, but then you'd also have to add a few others due to marriage too [SPOILER ALERT]. Let's just say this is the 'immediate family'.

One last TT update before we go...I just saw on the Tiny Tactical BrickLink page that Steve will reopen today at 12:00 PST, and new items will be included. Only a couple more hours to go...

(Via Roaglaan and Tin_7's Flickr streams)

    Tiny Tactical Restock Today (10/22)

I have it on good authority that Tiny Tactical may be restocking their BrickLink store today. The same source suggests that the Minifig Watches, M9A1 Rifle Grenades and Crickets will also be available. What shadowy source do I get all this information from?...

...the front page of the Tiny Tactical BrickLink store. Where else?! If there are items you are interested in, don't delay. It's not been uncommon recently for TT to sell out.

Head on over to my Flickr favorites to also see some of the new designs Steve's been delveloping. Doesn't this man sleep?

Last bit in TT news...the Panserschreck product review should be up on the site early next week. This will be the first in a line of new TT product reviews over the coming weeks.

    Tiny Tactical is Crazy

...like a fox. Steve has been rolling out the coming attractions, and most, if not all, of the recent additions are outstanding add-ons for existing BrickArms or Si-Dan weapons.

The first new items are these three selections of silencers that are compatible withthe BrickArms M4 Carbine.

Then he flashes us a look at these shotgun accessories that work with shotguns from both BrickArms and Si-Dan.

This man must be stopped, folks. My wallet can't take it! Just when you think he's done, he's 'threatened' to show us even more product very soon. The horror, the horror...

You know Mr. Chapman must be loving Steve right now. In economic terms these are complimentary goods - you can't really have these accessories without a BA weapon (and vice versa).

Quick Hits: While You Were Out

    >initiate Cygnetron 3000 auto blogging system...
    >...command?...Cygnetron 3000 shutdown...password?...
    >...password confirmed..returning control to human overlords...ha...ha...ha...

Very funny Cygnetron. Remind me to update your humor AI chip next time I'm out. That's the last time I purchase an 'auto blogging system' on Woot!

Greetings citizens! I'm now in the process of getting up to speed now that I'm back from vacation. In the grand tradition of cramming a lot of information into one bite-sized post, I give you 'Quick Hits - While You Were Out' edition...

As I'm sure you all know by now, LEGO.com updated their website recently. With that came new mini-sites for NinjaGO and Pharaoh's Quest. The NinjaGO site appears to have content that will unlock over time, while the Pharaoh's Quest teaser unveils itself in a similar fashion to what was used when the Atlantis line first launched. Both lines have strong custom potential. I'm also now convinced that JasBrick is a minifig designer for TLG, unbeknownst to him. Thanks to Brickset for getting me up to speed.

Bricktober is in full swing at Toys R Us. Not only are there great deals each week on LEGO items, there's a new vintage minifigure magnet available for LEGO purchases above $20 USD. We are now in week three and the minifig magnet this week is a City Fire Chief (picture via Toys N Bricks). Like other LEGO magnets, the figure can be removed from the base. If shopping online, be careful on how the various deals 'stack'. Brickset reports that the minifig promo and the BOGO 50% off deal may not 'play nice' together.

Nannan Z. has kicked off the 2010 Creations for Charity event in support of Toys for Tots. The various LEGO creations donated will be auctioned off to raise money for this worthy cause. It would be fantastic to see a good turnout from the custom minifig community. Click through to the link above for more details.

In customization news, Tin_7 was on a roll recently with new designs for his Last Airbender series and new Iron Man customs. Lots of great stuff to peruse and admire. Justin puts in a lot of effort into his work and it shows. He also has some fantastic designs for Quidditch uniform decals for houses other than Gryffindor and Slytherin.

Legoagogo was recently honored with a post on The Brothers Brick for his vignette focused on a Stormtrooper's wardrobe dilemma. Mark continues to 'wow' by combining great composition and lighting with wit and humor. Case in point? Take a look at his alternate view of the closing scene from Empire Strikes Back.

Before the break, I mysteriously mentioned 'the triumphant return of a familiar custom house'. The 'custom house' in question is Amazing Armory Ltd. and customizers like JasBrick and Pedro have been giving us a taste of what's to come. I've been talking with Hazel Tam, who heads up this outfit, and I'm happy to say that what he's shared with me about plans for the future are sure to astonish. All I can say for now is that these items will be available very soon, and you can purchase yours at United Armory and FireStar Toys (link above), to name a few.

Tiny Tactical has been on a roll recently. Not only have their latest products like the Panzerschreck, Handy Talkies, and TL-122 flashlights been selling out, they have recently announced even more new and innovative products. The new stuff includes a M9A1 anti-tank rifle grenade that works with a BrickArms M1 Garand Rifle, a minifig-scale wristwatch, and a cricket signal device. Pictures of the forthcoming items can be seen on Flickr. You can also visit the Tiny Tactical BrickLink store today.

There's a lot more to see from the past week on my Flickr favorites. I'm still working on catching up on all the great stuff out there. Apologies if I missed something in the process. I'll also be posting some new pics soon of recent BrickForge and TT deliveries.

That's all for now, citizens. Back to getting this show on the road...

More Tiny Tactical and Si-Dan Toys at FireStar

FireStar Toys just announced that they've not only gotten more Tiny Tactical stock in, but they've also just gotten in a shipment from Si-Dan Toys. Si-Dan is a company that has several LEGO compatible accessories in themes like SWAT, Ninjas, and Samurai. The gas masks alone are worth a look!

In addition to these new lots, FireStar has created a Halloween section on their site collecting all that's eerie, creepy, and spooky about the world of LEGO minifigures. A lot here from older figs and accessories to Collectible Minifigure favorites like The Witch and Vampire.

Quick Hits: The Road to STEAM and BrickCon

Just when I think Tuesday's are the big day for news....nothin'! We'll that's not exactly true, there are a few bits of news floating around on the interwebs today...

As I'm sure every LEGO fan in the Western Hemisphere is aware, BrickCon (Seattle, US) and The Great Western LEGO Show (Swindon, UK) are both this weekend. Friends of 'The Duck' JasBrick and Tac will both be presenting at Swindon. JasBrick has been sharing the many, many custom minifigs he's created for the event on his Flickr stream and around the community. I personally can't wait to see them all. He's also promised to debut some new, top-secret BrickArms prototypes with some of his figs. Best of luck to both Jas and Tac this weekend!

Conventions always mean new stuff from the custom houses. BrickArms plans to have several, never before seen prototypes at BrickCon this weekend. The M3 Grease Gun and Flamethrower may make an appearance, as well as the Z5E Pod Gun and Chakram. Given all the testing Will has done with camo patterns using his solvent inkjet printer, it wouldn't surprise me if those made an appearance too. Throw in the Medic and loose WWII US Soldier and there will definately be some empty pockets departing Sea-Tac come the end of the show. Minifig for Life, the official UK reseller of BrickArms, will be at STEAM, but no word yet as if some of these prototype products will be available. BrickForge will also be selling at BrickCon.

Not really news, more hope and anticipation...I'm hoping that both shows will have announcements regarding the new 2011 sets, especially LEGO Star Wars and Series 3 Collectible Minifigures. Given the leaks online of all the set pics, it would seem to behoove TLG to get the official pics out to the public. With only a couple more months until January 2011, I can't imagine the competitive impact would be all that great. I'm completely unbiased by the by. It's not like I've been working on the guide updates or anything...

In custom house news, Tiny Tactical sold out of their panzerschreks, handy talkies, and TL-122 flashlights. The handy talkies and flashlights sold out in two days! Steve promises more stock by the end of this week.

We should have a new product review to debut tomorrow. I'm finalizing the current drafts now for the BrickForge instrument collection. Once I've finished this round, we'll be moving away from BrickForge reviews...because I have Tiny Tactical product on order! It may be a while before those show, because...

...'The Duck' is going on haitus for the next two weeks. Why?! We'll I'm taking some time off and will be doing some traveling (I've also been told, under threat of death, that there will be no blogging while on holiday). I've given Cygnetron 3000 a tune up in anticipation of some automated posts while I'm out, but a lot of that will depend upon what happens this weekend. Regardless, I'll send out a post before I go about all the awesome stuff that's planned to go down while I'm out.

That's all for now, citizens. Here's to hoping this weekend will be big. All the best to those participating at BrickCon and The Great Western LEGO Show!

    Shobrick's Afghan CIA Agent

You know, there's nothing quite like finding another great customizer in the community. I will admit, I had seen the name, but had never seen his work.

Originally seen on customminifig.co.uk, this Afghanistan CIA Agent from Shobrick is brilliant! Lots of great details in the both the design of the minifig and the accessories. The camera really makes this for me. Do I spy some Tiny Tactical product in there too?

I highly recommend taking a look at the rest of his Flickr stream when you have the time.
