We Really Need to Stop Meeting Like This

I feel like I'm blogging Geoshift's customs every other day, but a deal is a deal - you keep making awesome creations, I'll keep writing about them.

Great use of the BrickTW Terra Cotta Warrior armor and Warhammer skulls. The Death Eater mask fits well with these combos too.

Geoshift keeps finding ways to wow us with these hybrids. I can't wait to see more.

BrickTW's Hearts of Hope

BrickTW has come out in support of Child Welfare in Taiwan. Winter can be a difficult time for one an all, but those in disadvantaged situations can feel the bit even more.

BrickTW has put together a package of custom minifigure accessories and items for sale whereby a portion of the proceeds will go to help child welfare in these tough times.

For more information, visit BrickTW's Flickr stream.

Just in Time for Valentine's Day

BrickTW has put together this lovely gift pack just in time for Valentines Day. The package includes two 'chocolate brown' minifigures bedecked in BrickTW customs, a brick-built hart and a nice mug for tea or coffee (mmm...coffee). I especially like how the mug shows a woman chasing around Zhu Bajie (my how the tables have turned)*.

This retails for $89 USD and can be purchased at BrickTW's BrickLink store.

*Forgive me there was a clearance sale at the parenthesis store...

Product Review - BrickTW 2011 Body Gear

A little over a year ago, custom house BrickTW took notice of small blog that featured their products and photos by customizer Tigerggyy. They sent me their first round of products which were the first series of product reviews to be showcased here on this site in May 2010. Nearly a year has gone by since I first discovered BrickTW, and I'm happy to be bringing you a review of their new 2011 body gear, a subset of their recently released line.

We will be covering eight items in all, including three new sets of armor, three sets of clothing, a new body enhancement piece, and skirt. Although BrickTW has primarily focused on the armor and weapons of ancient China, they continue to be innovators with their designs. This will be evident in the female clothing options and the Zhu Bajie body piece.

We will start with the three new sets of armor - Bamboo Raft Battle Gear, Terra Cotta Warrior, and Three Kingdoms Soldier. Each piece has solid ABS construction and fits firmly on the torso once the head is attached. The footprint of the body gear does not inhibit full arm movement. The longer profile of the piece, does prevent the legs from bending through their full range of motion, but this was a minor issue. The items shown here are in Tan, but the part also comes in Black, Brown, and Dark Gray.

BrickTW Bamboo Raft Armor (Tan)
BrickTW Terra Cotta Warrior Armor (Tan)
BrickTW Three Kingdoms Soldier Armor (Tan)

The next three selections are various forms of civilian clothing for men and women - the Male Civilian Clothing, Female Civilian Clothing, and Regular Female Clothing.

The Male Civilian Clothing has a similar look a feel as that of the previous armor pieces. Instead of  plates or rods, however, there are two curved lines to indicate the hem of a tunic.

The Female Civilian Clothing has a longer footprint, like the armor and  Male Civilian Clothes, but is a different style of 'skirt' compared to the other, longer pieces. Here is where the inventiveness of BrickTW shines through. No longer do female minifigs need to have profiles that are stuck in two dimensions! There is a 'bust' at the top of the torso to better resemble a woman's figure.

The Regular Female Clothing is similar to the Civilian Clothes, except the part finishes mid torso. This could represent a midriff style top or be used to blend with a torso design underneath. This part also features a curvier top to better represent the female form.

All three body gear pieces do not inhibit a full range of arm movement. The Male and Female Civilian Clothes do prevent the legs from moving through their full range of motion. As with the armor, any time a part extends much beyond the hips, this will tend to happen.

The pieces are shown here in Tan, but also come in Black, Brown, and Dark Gray.

This next piece is also just as original. Zhu Bajie is a character from the classic Chinese novel 'Journey Into the West'. He was one of the three helpers of the hero Xuanzang along with Sun Wukong (The Monkey King) and Sha Wujing. He is often depicted as a half-man, half-pig monster who often gets into trouble due to his gluttony, laziness, and tendency to chase pretty women.

The Zhu Bajie body gear resembles a large man with a round belly. This would appeal to those who felt the Series 3 Sumo Wrestler needed more...'heft'. The footprint of this piece fits within the torso and does not restrict arm movement. This item is shown here in Tan, but also comes in Black, Brown, and Dark Gray.

BrickTW Zhu Bajie (Tan)
The final piece has the most custom potential of all, the BrickTW skirt. At first glance the application of this part seems limited; it's a skirt for female minifigures. However, it can have applications with your Samurai and swordsmen too. Would you like a kama that has more flow on your clone commanders? A little modification and you are good to go.

The skirt fits on the hip posts and is secured once the torso is applied. The connection was good with solid ABS construction. The part thickness at the top near the hips causes the torso to ride a little higher on the hip posts. As a result the connection is not as firm as it would be without the skirt. Again, a minor issue as the connection holds and the leg and torso assemblies stay together.

The skirt is flared at the bottom to allow for leg movement, although it does inhibit a full range of motion. This range of motion is even more constrained than what was seen with the longer armor and clothing designs. Why? The skirt extends even lower on the leg of the minifigure. The further any molded part extends down the front or back of a minifig leg, it will naturally inhibit movement. Based on my measurements, you can expect a range of motion (total front to back) covering an arc of 15 to 25 degrees.

The item here is shown in Tan, but is also available in Black, Brown, and Dark Gray.

BrickTW Skirt (Tan)
All of these parts are recommended buys. Solid ABS construction and firm connections all around. Many of the pieces are inventive and can add a unique look to your custom creations. The longer armor pieces and the skirt can inhibit a full range of leg movement; however, this does not significantly impact play value and is viewed as a minor issue. Quick Hits: Custom House News

A couple of tid bits to share on BrickArms, BrickForge, and BrickTW...

BrickArms has announced that their January 2011 freebies will be (drum roll please)...desert cammo! So check your orders this month when you purchase the Modern Combat V2 packs and custom WWII minifigures.

You may have noticed that BrickForge has been updating their store with some new colors and prints on the guitars and hair pieces. You may want to hold off on rushing to order, however. Until Armothe lists an official announcement on the main page, it likely means that more additions are on the way.

Finally, BrickTW has updated their web site and now have a 'photo page' where they share many of their product related shots. Check them both out when you get a chance.

Exobrick's Fantastic Combos

Exobrick has always been adept at taking several official and custom parts and creating something with real appeal. His latest creation is no exception.

The hat is from Si-Dan, the body wear is from BrickTW, and the gas mask and shield are from Amazing Armory. The Auto-9 hand cannon is courtesy of BrickArms, while the cape and sheath are from MMCB.

The head? It's from the new LEGO Star Wars Embo minifig. I can see the head for this and the Imperial Pilot showing up in a lot of custom creations this year.

You can see other create customs from Exobrick via his Flickr stream. If you are interested in checking out where you can get some of these great custom parts, check out Minifig.Cat (Si-Dan), BrickTW, MMCB, and BrickArms. These specific Amazing Armory items can be purchased from FireStar Toys. Similar items can also be purchased from United Armory in the US and Canada.

BrickTW announced that they will have the hairpieces and claw weapon available in black and dark gray starting today. These are some great ways to add variety to your Asian themed creations...and that claw! Awesome.

You can check it all out on BrickTW's BrickLink store today.

Quick Hits: Pharaoh's Quest, Collectible Figs, and Custom House News

A few bits and pieces heading into the weekend...

Forum members at Toys N Bricks are starting to see LEGO Pharaoh's Quest showing up at Toys R Us stores in the US. Seems a bit early, and perhaps the store in question let these loose before they should, but it might mean you'll have the opportunity to score some before the new year. No news, however, on NinjaGo, which I would also expect to start showing up on shelves before too long.

Toys N Bricks is also stating that the Series 2 Collectible Minifigures are now sold out...which is to say that LEGO has likely sold out of their inventory. I saw several cases at a local Borders, but at $3.99 a pop I don't see these moving too fast. These are still out there in the wild if you look. If you can find them for MSRP, then you are lucky indeed. It definitely seemed as if TLG upped the amount of product in the US compared to Series 1, a trend that is likely to continue with Series 3.

BrickForge now has t-shirts for sale at their store. All black tees featuring the BrickForge logo blazing in six colors of glory. 4 adult and 2 kids sizes. Throw one in the cart after picking up some of their new products released earlier this week.

Tan hairpieces have been added to the BrickTW BrickLink store. Although I believe additional colors will be for sale, this now marks the launch of the full line-up of armor, weapons, and hairpieces. Also, BrickTW has several sets of their previous line on clearance. Snatch some of their earlier product up at discount prices. These packs give you a wide assortment of their goods to play with. Having reviewed these products in the past, I can say these are a recommended buy.

That's all for now, citizens. Potentially a lot more coming this weekend. We shall strive to keep you informed, as it happens...

Quick Hits: Weekend Edition

It always surprises me how on any given day in Minifig Nation you might have a wave of news hit you out of the blue. Let's get to it...

It looks like BrickTW has now posted their new arms designs to their BrickLink store. Some real stand-outs for me are the Quin Long shield and their various arrow designs that can be held in the minifig's hand. The body wear is available as well. Only the new head gear to go and then the whole, new line-up will be ready to order. Expect the full line up by early next week.

Hazel has been updating the status of the new Amazing Armory website via Flickr. There are still a few more details that need to addressed before it goes live, but rest assured, we will let you know once it does. Website or no, we've already told you that FireStar Toys has a supply of the new Hazel Fantasy guns. I have also heard that by tonight, US/Canadian customers can start to order product from United Armory! I believe it's Pedro's goal to have the items on the store either later tonight or tomorrow.

In other AMA related news, check-out these prototype pictures of the new shields with paint! These are absolutely amazing...no pun intended. When Hazel said he wanted to up the bar in minifig custom items, he wasn't kidding.

Although not new news itself, I thought I would post this pic of the Tiny Tactical watches (which I've not done before). Nicely detailed items that can give your fig that 'extra' touch. You can see more about these on the Tiny Tactical BrickLink store

A couple of bits on the site and the store. I've added a page tab now for 'Customization Tutorials' (you can see it in the blue bar at the top). These are links to various articles and tutorials on minifig customization techniques. I was always concerned that these got lost in the sidebar, but now they live on their own page for the world to see. As I say on the page, if you have tutorials you know of or would like to submit a tutorial to the site (hint, hint) I would be more than happy to host it. As I view this site to be a resource of the entire LEGO minifigure community, if you have suggestions or comments, please drop me a line (uglyduck.bricklink@gmail.com).

Some people ask me, "Why is the site called The Ugly Duckling at BrickLink?" Well, a little over a year ago I opened a store on said site focused on selling LEGO minifigures. That led to Facebook, and then, finally, starting this blog. So it really all started with the store. Speaking of the store, I have dropped my international shipping rate to $3.00 USD (originally $3.25). I have a sense this was a barrier for some potential international customers. If  you haven't taken a look at the store, please take the time for a quick peek. We have several Series 2 Collectible Minifigures for $2.99 USD, including accessories and stands. There are also a few Star Wars and Harry Potter items available. Shipping is flat rate when using USPS First Class, so you can buy all you want and the shipping fee stays the same.

That's all for now, citizens, enjoy your weekend. More news as it happens...

New BrickTW Body Wear Now Available

Given that it's now 11/5 in Taiwan (they live in the future) I thought I'd see if BrickTW posted their new body wear on the BrickLink store...they did. The body wear is available in dark gray, tan, brown, and black.

Why are you still reading this post? Head on over to BrickLink and check it out!

New BrickTW Armor and Body Wear

BrickTW has started to post pictures of their new line-up of armor and body wear on their Flickr stream. This is a great sign that they will be ready to sell by this Friday. Yes, BrickTW has a particular interest in Asian historical themes, but they have a lot of innovative items too.

Disappointed that the Series 3 Sumo Wrestler is more flat and less fat? Check out their Zhu Bajie body part. Wishing your female figs had more curves? They have a series of female clothing to fix that too. Do you wish your Samurai Warrior could have an actual skirt and not just a print one? Done.

You can see all of the pics of upcoming items on the BrickTW Flickr stream. Also, don't forget to check out their BrickLink store this weekend when these items go on sale.

Update: Amazing Armory Ltd. and BrickTW

I've just received word from both Hazel and the folks at BrickTW. The Amazing Armory Ltd. site is taking a bit longer to finalize, so it may be a few more days before it launches. Hazel and company are working very hard to have it up as soon as they can.

Kevin at BrickTW also wrote to let me know that sales are delayed a few days. The current plan is for the new armor to be sold starting 11/5, arms and weapons on 11/8, while the new hair pieces will be available on 11/11. So the good news is that we'll have new BrickTW armor by week's end!

Both groups want to make certain they bring you only their best offerings, so worry not. We will just have to be patient for a little while longer.

Quick Hits: Did I Miss a Day?!

Feels like a Tuesday today with all of the news floating around the interwebs. Let's shake off that candy hangover and get down to business.

BrickArms launched their October 2010 release at the 11th hour last night. Lots of cool new products and even a custom minifig design. The launch includes the following:
  • Brodie Helmet
  • Modern Combat Helmet
  • Shaun UK Zombie Fighter with custom printed torso
  • Spy Pack with Exclusive Limited Edition Golden Gun
  • Zombie Defense Pack 2010.1
  • World at War Chrome Pack
  • Modern Chrome Pack 2.0
  • Scifi Chrome Pack 2.0
  • Blade Chrome Pack 2.0
Even I haven't had time to peruse all the fun so head on over to the BrickArms store and check it out.

Tiny Tactical will be restocking their shelves today at around 5 pm PST (they are located in British Columbia, Canada). On tap for returns are the TT-RPzB54 Panzerschrecks, Guns (KSV, SBR-M4, G18), tactical vests, TL-122 flashlights and Handie-Talkies, Minifig watches in (Gold, Stainless, Black, OD Green, yellow, red, blue, dark grey, dark tan), M9A1 Rifle Grenades and Crickets. Good thing too as I'm re-releasing the Panzerschreck review on Eurobricks today and have a new review ready to launch.

We should expect some new news from Amazing Armory Ltd. and BrickTW very soon. I noticed this morning that the Amazing Armory site still shows the countdown clock, and no word yet from BrickTW. I'll let you know if I hear more from either vendor.

More as it becomes available...

New BrickTW are Go!

BrickTW has confirmed that their new 2010 line-up of custom goodies will be on time for a Halloween launch! The folks at BrickTW have taken special care to make certain this latest batch of product was up to their quality standards. My hats off to everyone at BrickTW to taking the time to get these right, instead of rushing them out the door.

As you can see from our previous posts and from the picture above, that this latest batch of product has a lot to offer. So get ready to head on down to the BrickTW BrickLink store between 10/31 and 11/1 and pick out your favorites!

More from Tigerggyy and BrickTW

Tigerggyy continues to share the test runs of the new BrickTW product. The most recent pics show off the 'skirt' pieces which have a wide variety of applications. I'm really digging the samurai custom on the right. It looks like Si-Dan may have some competition on the minfig samurai front!

Huzzah! A Sneak Peek at BrickTWs Latest

Hey, I spent the day at the Ohio Renaissance Festival, what can I say?

Tigerggyy has posted two pics showing off some of the 2010/2011 product planned from BrickTW. Marked as 'test runs', these give us a sense of what the new product will look like. I'm personally very excited about the claw at the top of the pic. It would also appear we will have top knot hair pieces aplenty to choose from. Hopefully we will see production runs for this product very soon.

In the meantime you can peruse through our review of BrickTW's current line-up or check out their BrickLink store.

Tigerggyy Montage Poster

I realized that it's been some time since I posted any of Tigerggyy's work here. Then I came across this poster montage on Facebook and thought I would correct that.

I'm really looking forward to the new product from BrickTW later this year (where Tiger is a designer). The latest I've heard, they are working to make everything just right. While you are waiting you can browse BrickTW's wares on their BrickLink store.

Tigerggyy's Got the (New) Goods

Tigerggyy's Lin's FamilyTigerggyy is back with a new photo series titled "Lin's Family". The montage shown here features two warriors, one clad in black the other in white. The man in black appears to be sporting a BrickTW Saint Sword, but what's that halberd in the white warrior's hand? Could that be part of the new BrickTW collection?

I had heard that BrickTW was hoping to launch some of their new product in July. Here's hoping we just got a teaser.

BrickTW Product Reviews

BrickTW VignetteIn May 2010, we ran a series of product reviews for custom house BrickTW. This "guide" collects those reviews for easy reference. I hope that you walk away from this experience with a better sense of BrickTW's offerings and how they can enhance your custom minifigures or LEGO MOC's.

BrickTW is a custom house out of Taiwan specializing in Oriental weapons and armor. BrickTW strives not only to develop quality items but to develop products with ties to Asian history and culture.

You may have seen the brick comics by Tigerggyy on this blog in the past. Tigerggyy is one of the designers working with BrickTW, and many of his comics feature their products.

I hope you enjoy these reviews. I personally learned a lot and had a blast putting them together.

If you would like to check out BrickTW's product, feel free to visit their website or their BrickLink store today.

Tigerggyy Patrols the Manchu-Russian Border

Tigerggy is back with a new brick comic focused on the Manchu-Russian border skirmishes. According to the all knowing Oracle (aka Wikipedia):

The Russian-Manchu border conflicts (1643-1689) were a series of intermittent skirmishes between the Manchus and the Cossacks in which the Cossacks tried and failed to gain the land north of the Amur River. The hostilities culminated in the Manchu siege of the Cossack fort of Albazin (1686) and resulted in the Treaty of Nerchinsk, concluded between the Russia and the Qing Empire in 1689.

The main character in this composition is armed with a cross dragon spear and round-style fighting shield form BrickTW. The Ching Dynasty armor and helm are also from this custom house.
